The Best of the Decade - #7

Mystic River (2003)
Directed by: Clint Eastwood

Mystic River is really the movie that made me a 100% Clint Eastwood fan. Since seeing it, Eastwood gets a complete pardon from me when he ever makes a bad movie. Mystic River is the perfect example of what a master storyteller Eastwood is. He doesn't linger on the small aspects. He does what needs to be done to tell the story. If a line is delivered poorly, so be it. We've heard the line and we know its purpose within the story. Mystic River hardly has to worry about poorly delivered lines however as the performances are stellar. Laura Linney has a terrible Boston accent and Kevin Bacon talks about the old neighborhood too much but Sean Penn gives the performance of a very impressive career, Tim Robbins figures out how to be creepy and sympathetic at the same time and even Lawrence Fishburne was good. The seventh best film of the decade is one that set off a streak of brilliant films by Eastwood, a streak that I hope continues.
