The Best of the Decade - #13

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Directed by: Peter Jackson

The Return of the King was a great conclusion to a great trilogy but I can only wonder if I had not been sucked into the story, about which I knew and cared very little about prior to the films, by The Fellowship of the Ring, if I'd ever even have gotten to the third and final film. Fellowship gave us a new look at this decade's epic. It set a new standard for special effects and battle sequences all without sacrificing the story. There are certain themes that generate through the three Lord of the Rings films and Fellowship has one that is so common and relatable that it drives the film forward, it creates emotions and it leaves you wanting more. Companionship, friendship, brotherhood, fellowship... whatever you want to call it is the main theme of the first of the three films and its the one that garners up the most emotions for me. That mixed with the quality of filmmaking and what was at that point in the trilogy, surprisingly good acting from Elijah Wood and Sean Astin and of course a great performance from Ian McKellen are what make Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring the thirteenth best of the decade.
